Derek Macario (b. 1992) is a Mexican-Guatamalen artist based in Oakland.

His art practice – which includes film photography, zine production, and writing – is influenced from childhood memories of growing up in the 90s and being immersed in public spaces, and being raised in San Francisco.

The subjects that he addresses are experiences that are emblems of resilience and resistance to the rapid changes of the city - Macario celebrate and preserves environment; nature, landscape, and people less prominently observed. Macario’s work is an ongoing examinination of the immediate surroundings of San Francisco’s physical peripheries and the subjects that take up those spaces.
