Derek Macario (he/him) is a first-gen Mexican-Guatamalen artist based in Oakland and San Francisco, California.

His practice, film photography, zine production, and writing,  affirms diverse local cultural communites and their practices. 

Macario has been independently producing zines for the past 10 years. Macario documents various community celebrations, including Carnaval SF. In 2024, Macario released a Carnaval SF photobook covering 2018-2023.

In Fall 2022, Macario’s work was installed at the Southeast Community Center (Bayview) and included in The City and County of San Francisco’s permanent art Collection. 

He works full time as a public high school school educator in San Francisco.
